How To Sell A Comic Book Idea
When Wanda Maximoff and Vision arrived on Disney+ two months ago, the TV series triggered critical praise and an instant following.
And for comic book owners, Marvel's WandaVision also delivered an opportunity to cash in, according to data from eBay.
"Since the show's premiere, eBay has seen a 242 per cent increase globally on sales of the comic book series WandaVision is based on, House of M," eBay Australia's Sophie Onikul told Yahoo Finance.
"We've also seen sales of The Avengers comics increase by 53 per cent."
At the same time, Marvel rival DC has seen its comic book sales fall by 33 per cent on eBay.
WandaVision products were in particularly high demand, with sales increasing 900 per cent, while Vision comics increased 120 per cent, Scarlet Witch comics 308 per cent and Quicksilver comics by 71 per cent.
"There's never been a better time to list your Marvel comics on eBay," Onikul said.
Over the last year, eBay has seen several comic books sell for more than AU$15,000, with Captain America and X-Men issues in particular picking up huge prices.
Most valuable comic books sold on eBay over the last year
-
$AUD51,528.98 ($US39,500): Captain America Issue #1 (1941)
-
$AUD32,612.49 ($US25,000): Captain America Issue #120 original cover art (1969)
-
$AUD27,394.49 ($US21,000): Uncanny X-Men Issue #1 (1963)
-
$AUD15,980.12 ($US12,250): Uncanny X-Men Issue #1 (1963)
Onikul said people considering hawking their comics on eBay do their research first.
"Take a look on-site to see what similar comic books are being sold for as this will help you figure out what they're worth. Try selling a complete comic book series to give yourself the best chance of attracting big collectors," she said.
Additionally, both Marvel and DC announce the movies they have in the pipeline well – and often years – in advance. You should be across this and put relevant releases into your calendar.
"These days, it's hard to come by a comic book that hasn't been made into a movie or TV series. To get the most bang for your buck, look into upcoming release dates so you can capitalise on the momentum surrounding TV or film adaptations," Onikul said.
Then it comes back to basics: make sure you have a good description and at least three pictures of the comic book.
You can also promote your product more by being savvy with your listing schedule, Onikul said.
"List the items between 7-9 pm when most eBay shoppers are browsing."
